Former Ignacio resident Barbara Jo Murphy died suddenly Saturday, July 6, 2013, at her home in Farmington. She was 58. The cause of death is undetermined at this time.

Mrs. Murphy was born to Harold and Emma Lou Wright on Dec. 3, 1954, in Durango. She was one of seven children and grew up in Pagosa Springs and Ignacio. She graduated from Ignacio High School in 1973.

On June 2, 1973, she married the man her family called “the love of her life,” Benjamin Sidney Murphy, in Ignacio. The couple had five children together.

Mrs. Murphy graduated as a registered nurse from San Juan College in Farmington in 1982. She worked at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington for about 26 years.

“Barbara dedicated her life to her family and to her career as a registered nurse,” her family said.

She also worked as a home health nurse caring for babies in need. Later in life, she volunteered with several organizations, including the Farmington Museum, Farmington Parks and Recreation and the Farmington Animal Shelter.

“Barbara was truly an angel who filled this world with light and inspiration for all she touched,” her family said. “Her laughter and smile were infectious.”

Mrs. Murphy is survived by her husband of 40 years, Benjamin Murphy of Farmington; children Michael Murphy of Highland Ranch, David Murphy of Aurora, Timothy Murphy of Albuquerque, Sarah Murphy of Las Cruces, N.M., and Phillip Murphy of Williston, N.D.; brothers Terrence Wright of Pagosa Springs, Michael Wright of Ignacio and John Wright of Campbellsville, Ky.; sister Benita Wright of Farmington; and four grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, July 12, 2013, at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 211 W. 20th St., in Farmington.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to help defray funeral expenses may be made in the family’s name to Emmanuel Baptist Church, 211 W. 20th St., Farmington, N.M. 87401.
