Old spill site still contains toxic chemicals

I own three parcels at Mile Marker 51 on U.S. Highway 160 – the 2006 oil industry spill and drill site. It has 21 abandoned wells, documented to contain cancer-causing chemicals, 400 times what is allowable.

The plume is 30 feet deep and spreads entirely under U.S. Highway 160, turning the scenic byway into a toxic highway.

The Bureau of Land Management plans to sell new sites from Mancos to Hesperus. The agency has had more than seven years to clean up my now-valueless parcels.

The government cannot enforce regulations, fine or even police one well, right in front of a national park.
