Gregorita C. Cruz


Ignacio resident Gregorita C. Cruz died Monday, Nov. 4, 2013, at the family ranch near Ignacio. She was 86.

Known as “Gregg,” she was born to Jose and Aleja Lucero on May 7, 1927, in Dulce, N.M. She grew up in Dulce and attended a boarding school called “El Rito,” graduating from secondary school.

She met her future husband, Archie Cruz, in Lumberto, N.M. The couple married July 22, 1946, in Durango. They moved to Utah, where Mr. Cruz worked as a coal miner. The Cruzes moved back to Colorado and bought the farm near Ignacio in 1962. They reared their family, raised cattle and sheep and grew hay.

Mrs. Cruz worked as a court clerk for the Southern Ute Indian Tribe from 1963 to 1990.

“She enjoyed being a farmer’s wife, sewing and crocheting,” according to her family. “She was an excellent cook and liked to solve crossword and word-search puzzles. Her favorite color was red.”

Mrs. Cruz is survived by her husband of 67 years, Archie Cruz, of Ignacio; sons Jerry Cruz of Ignacio and Danny Cruz of Aurora; sister, Bertha Blythe of Beaverton, Ore.; seven granddaughters and one grandson; 19 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, 15449 Colorado Highway 172, in Ignacio. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, also at St. Ignatius. The Rev. Damien de la Cruz will be the celebrant.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, D.C. 20090; or the American Heart Association, 1280 S. Parker Road, Denver CO 80231.
