Bayfield High School boys basketball head coach called Friday’s season-opening loss to Monticello, Utah, an abberation.
That was after the Wolverines responded with a 76-40 win over Shiprock in the second game of the Cortez Tournament on Saturday in Cortez.
Bayfield’s offense flowed better, leading to two players in double figures compared to none Friday: Zane Phelps led the Wolverines with 16 points, while Preston Hardy had 13.
“Offensively we were much more fluid. The ball was being passed,” Stephens said. “We got a lot of good looks at the basket.”
The Wolverines eliminated their slow-starting issues from the previous night to lead 24-7 after the first quarter.
BHS will play Bloomfield at 7 p.m. Thursday in Farmington.
“I feel we’ve built a good foundation, and now we just need to keep adding to what we’re doing,” Stephens said.
