Inching closer to full strength

DHS girls tennis team loses while gaining some important pieces to its lineup

A second consecutive home match produced a second consecutive 5-2 loss for the Durango High School girls tennis team.

The Demons fell to Montrose on Saturday in Durango after losing to Grand Junction Central by the same score Friday in their home opener.

Emma Hagen won for the second consecutive match at No. 3 singles, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.

The names of Montrose’s players weren’t available.

“It’s clear that (Hagen) can direct the ball around the court. It’s helping her out a lot,” DHS head coach Dave Weisfeldt said. “She worked the corners and got them moving.”

Meredith Nass ran into another tough opponent in only her second match of the season, losing 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 singles.

“She tried to hang in there,” Weisfeldt said. “There was more pace than she got (Friday). She’s still in experience mode after being out early in the season.”

Maggie Hackett lost 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.

The Demons’ No. 1 doubles team of Audrey Morris and Jenny Snowberger lost 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) in a tough tiebreaker.

“They had momentum in the second set, but Montrose was able to hang around long enough to be problematic in the end,” coach Weisfeldt said.

Rachel Cooper and Eva Eckstein won the first No. 2 doubles set 7-5 before dropping the second set 6-4 and the decisive tiebreaker 10-7.

“We haven’t had those two together since the first weekend of the season, so that was good,” Weisfeldt said.

Ellie Gervais and Hailee Pritchard won 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 at No. 3 doubles, and Ali Carey and Jenna Engelken lost 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 doubles to close out the day.

“We needed Jenna further up in the lineup without Eva (Friday),” Weisfeldt said. “They were eager after the match and played another match against a Montrose JV team.”

Up next for the Durango Demons: the Delta County Invitational at 8 a.m. Friday in Delta.

Weisfeldt expects to be at full strength for the Delta County Invitational for the first time all season with the return of players from injuries.

“It’s big for us. That is the beginning of the end of the season,” he said. “It’s like regionals before regionals. Finally with a complete team, we can see what we look like.”
