Meet fit for a Hall of Famer

DHS ready to host its annual home meet, the Ron Keller Invitational
Durango High School junior Joe Logan and senior Zeb Soignier are jumping at the idea of performing in front of their home fans. The boys will compete in the 300-meter hurdles Tuesday afternoon during the Ron Keller Invitational at DHS.

Shortly after landing back in Durango after a weekend trip to Los Angeles, the Durango High School track and field teams transitioned into preparing to host a meet of their own.

A select group of DHS Demons competed in the Arcadia Invitational in California on Friday and Saturday. They reunited with the rest of the team Monday and are ready to compete in front of their home fans Tuesday at the Ron Keller Invitational at DHS.

Named after the school’s legendary coach who was inducted into the Colorado High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame on March 29, the Ron Keller Invitational is set to begin at 1 p.m. with field events preceding the track events.

Eleven teams are expected to join the Demons for the meet: Alamosa, Bayfield, Centauri, Del Norte, Dolores, Dove Creek, Ignacio, Mancos, Montezuma-Cortez and Pagosa Springs.

A year ago, the DHS boys swept the relay and sprinting events while winning all the field events other than the high jump.

Miranda Gallegos will try to defend her 2013 wins in the 100- and 200-meter dashes as well as the long jump.

Gabi Razma has continued to improve upon her school-record in the triple jump almost every week, and she will try to best her 36-feet, 9.25 inches mark while going for another first-place finish at the Ron Keller Invitational.

Adding a little bit of fun are six featured events including a Special Olympic 100-meter run, a coaches 400-meter run/hobble. There also is a 400-meter, 3,200-meter and one-mile run along with a shot put event in which alumni and citizens can try to best the results of the high school teams. The cost of the races and shot put event is $15, and all the money goes to benefit the DHS track teams. If a fan wins an event and can outperform the high school winners, they will earn a $50 gift card to a Durango-area restaurant.

Action will continue throughout the night, with the last scheduled event, the boys 1,600-meter relay, scheduled for 9:15 p.m.
