Durango rides into the top 10 best U.S. cycling towns

We’re No. 8, but at least we’re top 10, right?

That’s Durango’s ranking in the 10Best Readers’ Choice travel award contest for best U.S. cycling town sponsored by USA Today.

Former road racing great George Hincapie, who lent a hand in the contest, said we’re an “outdoorsy, bike-friendly community.”

There were 20 cities in the running. Online voting concluded Monday, and if you didn’t vote, well then, shame on you. Davis, Calif., where there’s bike lanes on 95 percent of the roadways and supposedly 22 percent of its residents commute by bike, garnered the most votes.

The top 10: Davis; Fort Collins; Minneapolis; Madison, Wis.; Greenville, S.C.; Chattanooga, Tenn.; Tucson, Ariz.; Durango; Sacramento, Calif.; and Bend, Ore.

Some notable cities not on the top 10 that might make you pause before you take this list too seriously: Portland, Ore., Boulder and Moab, Utah.

Hmm.
