Demons get rivalry revenge

DHS flips the script for a home victory

A scoreless tie didn’t suit the Durango High School girls soccer team well the last time the Demons played rival Montezuma-Cortez.

The Demons were determined not to let history repeat itself against the Panthers on Thursday in Durango.

DHS (4-3-2, 3-3-2 Southwestern League) didn’t take long to score against Montezuma-Cortez (2-7-2, 1-6-1 SWL), going up 2-0 at halftime and winning by the same score Thursday at the Riverview Sports Complex.

“It was a good feeling not to have a letdown. We felt like when we played them the first time, we had 30 shots on goal and couldn’t score,” DHS head coach Dalon Parker said. “We felt defeated after the last time we played them, so we were stoked to play this game and to come and take it to Cortez.”

Lauran Morrissey scored the first goal for the Demons, and Amelia Wigton scored again just five minutes later.

“We created opportunities by being patient. Once we got the two-goal lead, we just tried to possess the ball and remain patient,” Parker said.

Montezuma-Cortez had its best chance to score in the final 10 minutes of the first half, but the Demons thwarted any threat.

“There were 10 minutes of the 80-minute game where we didn’t play well,” Parker said. “They had five or six chances to put one in the back of the net, but we came back out and woke up.”

DHS goalie Kelly Perry made six saves in the win.

Thursday’s game was the first of three games in as many days for the Demons. DHS will travel to face Coronado and Pine Creek in Colorado Springs the next two days.

“The girls are happy, confident and having fun, and that’s the most important thing in girls sports. The girls play better when its like that,” Parker said. “We are confident going to the Front Range, but we have a very big challenge ahead this weekend.”
