BHS girls soccer on the wrong kind of streak

Going into Thursday, Bayfield’s girls soccer team hadn’t allowed a league opponent to score a goal.

That changed quickly in the second meeting with Alamosa, but it was the Wolverines who scored their first goal against themselves. After surrendering an own-goal two minutes into the game, Bayfield (6-3, 5-1 3A Region 5) went on to lose 4-0 at home to the Mean Moose (7-1, 7-1 3A Region 5).

“We just didn’t show up to play our game,” BHS head coach Jen Zelinski said. “We knew we had beat ’em once and thought we would beat ’em again, but we didn’t do the work to beat them.”

BHS won at Alamosa 1-0 on March 18. Now, the Mean Moose will have the goal differential tiebreaker if the two teams finish the regular season tied in the league standings.

“We are going to need them to lose or tie or something, but it is out of our hands now,” Zelinski said.

Alamosa took a 2-0 lead into halftime. The Wolverines tried to adjust at the half, but a third goal by Alamosa sent BHS into a downward spiral.

“It was no big deal after the own goal. The second half we made some changes, but after they scored a third goal, we went into self destruct mode,” Zelinski said. “We’ve had great chemistry all year, and the first time we are tested and scored on in league, we self-destructed.

“Alamosa is a very good team, and they definitely deserved to win.”

BHS will try to snap a three-game losing streak 4 p.m. Monday at home against Center (3-3-2, 2-2-1 3A Region 5), the Wolverines’ penultimate home game of the season and last until April 29 against Ignacio. BHS will play two road games in between.
