Controlling Coronado

Demons take a 1-nil shutout in Colorado Springs

Nothing made Durango High School girls soccer head coach Dalon Parker happier than watching his team dominate possession with a one-goal lead.

After Steffie Wilson scored a first-half goal, the DHS Demons (5-3-2, 3-3-2 Southwestern League) dominated the ball and never let Coronado High School (4-6, 4-1 Colorado Springs Metro League) have a good chance at tying the game Friday in Colorado Springs. The Demons went on to win the game 1-0, the team’s third consecutive victory and second in as many days.

“We really clamped down defensively in the second half and played one of our better games of the season,” Parker said. “It had to be one of our highest possession rates of the season. Coronado couldn’t get the ball off our foot.”

The Cougars had just one shot on goal in the second half. Kelly Parker easily made the save, one of four saves she made in the game.

Wilson’s goal came about 20 minutes into the game. DHS freshman Lane Arnwine made a run down field and fired a shot on goal. Coronado’s keeper made the save on Arnwine’s shot, but Wilson was there to finish it in the back of the net.

Parker was thrilled with the team’s crisp passing throughout the game.

“The team is coming together great. They’ve taken bumps and bruises early on and showed some resiliency,” he said. “We are coming on strong right now. As coach, it’s fun to see.”

The Demons will play their third game is as many days at 11 a.m. Saturday against 5A Pine Creek (9-1), the No. 3-ranked team in the classification and fourth-ranked team in the state, according to MaxPreps.com.

“If we could win (Saturday), it would be one of the biggest wins, outside of the playoffs, ever for us,” Parker said. “To go in there and get a win would absolutely be incredible, and it would catapult us into playoff-mode. The girls are pumped.”
