DHS girls lacrosse run ends at three games

Demons come up a goal short against Santa Fe Prep

Jenni Darlow told her team she wanted them to score 12 goals Friday in Santa Fe. Turns out, that would’ve been enough to win, but 10 wasn’t.

The Durango High School girls lacrosse team lost 11-10 at Santa Fe Prep in New Mexico, the Demons (3-8, 1-4 Mountain League) first loss in four games.

“Before the game I told the girls our goal was to score 12 goals, and that’s what would’ve done it,” Darlow said. “It was a frustrating game for a lot of people. A lot of the girls are down on themselves, feeling like they didn’t play well, and I am shouldering a lot of the blame for a few coaching decisions I made that, in retrospect, may have hurt us.”

The Demons had a 5-3 lead late in the first half, but two late goals – including one with only 8 seconds left in the half – helped Santa Fe Prep claim momentum going into the break.

The Blue Griffins scored two more quick goals to open the second half before the Demons again tied it. Santa Fe Prep eventually took an 11-9 advantage. The Demons scored with six minutes left to make it 11-10.

Jessie Sutherlin led the Demons with four goals. Tymbree Hawkins had three goals and one assist, Angela Grogan scored two goals, and Payton Randle added one goal. Alyssa Swan had one assist.

Santa Fe Prep had a tall defender who made things difficult on the Demons; she recorded three interceptions in the first half.

DHS will remain in Santa Fe overnight to scrimmage the Blue Griffins again Saturday. The Demons will travel to play Summit on April 25, before hosting Santa Fe Prep on April 26.

“We hope to improve upon things we know we can do better on and have a better result next time we play them,” Darlow said.
