BHS girls soccer picks up a much-needed league win

Losing three consecutive games can give a team a sense of urgency.

That was the case for the Bayfield High School soccer team, which opened the season 6-0 before dropping three in a row.

The BHS Wolverines (7-3, 6-1 3A Region 5) bounced back with a 2-0 victory Monday against Center (5-4-2, 4-3-1 3A Region 5) at Wolverine Country Stadium in Bayfield.

“We had played some hard teams recently, but the girls were antsy to get another win,” BHS head coach Jen Zelinski said. “They were nervous (Monday), but that is good. I want them to understand the severity of needing to win.”

The Wolverines were able to relax a bit after going up 1-0 in the first half on a goal by senior Jaida Ross. Ross took a corner kick and bent it past the Center goalkeeper.

BHS scored once more in the second half on a goal by sophomore Maddy Duran. It was assisted by Meaghan Mooney and Andrea Zelinski.

“We kept the ball on (Center’s) half for most of the game, and our defense got involved offensively. That’s great, and makes us even more threatening,” coach Zelinski said. “We tried some new things with girls in different places and some new formations. There still are some kinks to work out, but it was effective.”

BHS freshman goalkeeper Kailee Millard only had to make a couple of saves in the game, coach Zelinski said.

The Wolverines have a big weekend ahead with league games Friday and Saturday at Ridgway and Telluride.

“It is absolutely a big weekend,” coach Zelinski said.
