Skyhawks roll out a championship start

FLC crowned national champion in team time trial

Day 1, Event 1, and Fort Lewis College was crowned a national champion.

The men’s team time trial of Natan Cavalca, Griffin Easter, Dean Haas and Zack Noonan covered the 31-kilometer course first in 40 minutes, 42.91 seconds Friday morning in Richmond, Virginia, 34 seconds ahead of runner-up Marian and 67 seconds ahead of third-place Lindenwood.

FLC is second in the omnium standings at the USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships.

Maddie Chaves, Sydney Edmonson, Sofia Gomez Villafane and Jenna MacPherson finished fifth for the Skyhawks in the women’s Division I team time trial, a little less than two minutes behind first-place Marian.

Marian earned 94 points for the women’s victory and 83 points for the men’s runner-up result to lead the omnium with 177 total points.

FLC earned 94 points for the men’s victory and 56 for the women’s fifth-place result and have 150 total points, 27 points behind Marian and 13 points ahead of Stanford.

Lindenwood is fourth with 122 points, and California-Davis is fifth with 117 points, the only five schools with more than 100 points after the first of three days of competition.

Colorado-Boulder (65) is ninth.

Colorado State (49) is 10th.

Colorado Mesa (188) leads the Division II omnium, 31 points ahead of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Air Force Academy is third with 107 points.

Easter, Haas, Renan Maia and Noonan will compete for FLC in the men’s criterium Saturday, and Chaves, Ivie Crawford, Edmonson and MacPherson will compete for FLC in the women’s criterium.

The entire FLC road nationals team, including freshman Max Thilen, will compete in Sunday’s road race, the final event.
