Mullen loses, knocks out DHS girls tennis team

‘All in all, just getting to state is one of our goals’

Mullen couldn’t hold up its end of the bargain.

The Mustangs’ No. 4 doubles team lost 6-3, 7-6 in the semifinals of the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 4A Girls Tennis State Championships, eliminating Durango’s team of Ali Carey and Jenni Snowberger from playbacks contention.

The Demons would have had a chance to continue playing for third or fourth place if Mullen’s duo advanced to the finals, but it didn’t happen.

“All in all, just getting to state is one of our goals,” DHS head coach Dave Weisfeldt said. “We’re thrilled to get the opportunity to get to Pueblo. The whole motif of the season was overcoming adversity with all the lineup struggles we had and trying to keep a positive attitude.

“They really rose to the occasion.”

Carey and Snowberger only had been playing together since the regional tournament May 2.

DHS shuffled its lineup constantly throughout the season.

The Demons didn’t win a dual match until their final opportunity April 22 against the Montezuma-Cortez Panthers.
