Durango 9-R seeks public scrutiny for its proposal

Durango School District 9-R officials have been working to close a $4 million shortfall in the upcoming budget year. After-school programs, among others, had been considered for cuts.

The public is invited to a final roundtable session Monday to have a look at what probably will be Durango School District 9-R’s upcoming year’s budget that goes to school board members.

The meeting is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. in the district office board room, 201 E. 12th St.

School officials economized, scrimped and dug into reserves for several years as state legislators reduced the amount of money going for education. Durango 9-R came up short more than $4 million in that period.

Public comment from early roundtable meetings showed steady support for certain priorities – support for all youngsters, including struggling students; enrichment programs and manageable class size.

Finally, in April, administrators crafted a combination of retirements, buyouts, job eliminations and consolidation of positions to erase an accumulated $1.6 million deficit.

On Monday, a proposed balanced budget will be presented for public scrutiny. School board members will take it from there.
