A Durango man was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center with a possible head injury Thursday morning after being involved in a traffic accident at Main Avenue and 21st Street.

Charles Peterson, 23, was driving a 2004 blue Yamaha Vino motor scooter northbound on Main Avenue at 8:51 a.m. when a 2000 Jeep Cherokee pulled out in front of him while turning left onto Main Avenue from 21st Street, said Lt. Ray Shupe, spokesman with the Durango Police Department.

Peterson struck the driver’s side of the Jeep and was knocked off his motor scooter, which was totaled in the crash.

He was taken to Mercy before being transferred to another hospital, said Allison Zarlingo, marketing coordinator at Mercy.

The Jeep was being driven by Newlin Freeman, 25, of Durango.

Freeman was not injured in the crash. His vehicle had moderate damage, Shupe said.

Freeman was cited for careless driving, causing bodily injury, failing to yield proceeding from a stop sign and no proof of insurance, Shupe said.

Speed was not factor in the accident. Alcohol or drugs are not suspected either, he said.
