Youth swimmers divided and conquered

Durango Swim Club competes in Ouray and Grand Junction in the same weekend

A split Durango Swim Club team held its own at two recent meets.

Eight of the club’s top athletes competed at the Grand Junction Invitational on June 12-15 in Grand Junction, and four of them advanced to the meet’s finals.

Haley Benjamin (13) won the 200-meter butterfly, 100-meter freestyle, 400-meter freestyle, 800-meter freestyle and 1,500-meter freestyle and finished third in the 400-meter individual medley.

“Haley still has no idea how fast she can go,” DSC head coach Suzanne Schieltz said in an email to The Durango Herald. “She is the Energizer Bunny.”

Anne Mummery (15) finished seventh in the 200-meter backstroke, ninth in the 50-meter freestyle and 100-meter backstroke, 10th in the 100-meter freestyle and 12th in the 200-meter freestyle.

Brooke Kniffin (18) was sixth in the 200-meter backstroke and seventh in the 100-meter backstroke. She recently graduated from Durango High School and will continue her swimming career at the University of Hawaii.

Quinn Schmidt (10) took second in the 1,500-meter freestyle and 21st in the 400-meter freestyle.

The rest of the team participated in a one-day meet June 14 at Ouray Hot Springs.

Angela McManus (10) won the 50-meter breaststroke, and she finished second in the 100-meter IM and third in the 50-meter backstroke. Her younger sister, Aileen (5), took second in the 50-meter breaststroke and 50-meter freestyle.

Taylor Dean (7) was fourth in the 50-meter freestyle. Avery Dean (10), Taylor’s older sister, took fifth in the 50-meter backstroke and eighth in the 50-meter breaststroke.

Elizabeth O’Reilly (8) finished fourth in the 25-meter freestyle and sixth 25-meter backstroke.

Brandon Butler (11), a new addition to the swim club, took sixth in the 50-meter backstroke and seventh in the 50-meter freestyle.

Zada Lile (7) was sixth in the 50-meter freestyle and eighth in the 25-meter backstroke.

Sadie McAliney (14) took sixth in the 100-meter IM and seventh in the 50-meter breaststroke.

Seylia Schmidt (10) finished fifth in the 50-meter freestyle and sixth in the 50-meter backstroke.

DSC next will swim at home from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Durango Community Recreation Center.
