Buchanan deserves well-earned rest

I am one of many readers of Garth Buchanan’s “On Science” column who will greatly miss his knowledge and voice of reason. Bill Roberts’ fine tribute to Buchanan’s columns said that “he enjoyed debunking popular silliness and countering dangerous unscientific prejudices” (Herald, July 6). This was never more clear to me than when he called out those who currently demonize skeptics of climate-change alarmism (so-called “deniers”) by pointing out that skepticism is the essence of the scientific method and that acknowledgment of uncertainty and respect for alternative hypotheses is critical to scientific honesty.

Buchanan deserves a well-earned rest for all of his service. Thanks to him for all that he has sacrificed for and all that he has accomplished in life, and many thanks to the Herald for publishing the thoughts of a local treasure for nearly 20 years.
