Fracking rules should be based on evidence

Thank you for publishing the story headlined “Hydraulic fracturing in question” (Herald, July 29.) I found the article to be well done and informative.

Rules designed to protect our environment are an important responsibility of government, and these regulations must be rooted in the evidence provided by the best-available science. Additionally, discussions on these rules must be evidence-based and not based on unfounded allegations.

Colorado has implemented some of the best, evidence-based regulations in the nation that serve to protect the environment while allowing for the responsible development of natural gas and oil. Assertions that hydraulic fracturing has caused wide-spread groundwater contamination are not supported by evidence, yet they are unfortunately repeated.
