Skyhawks blanked in preseason opener

Fort Lewis College men’s soccer coach Oige Kennedy watched as his team fell 3-0 to the University of New Mexico Lobos in an exhibition game Monday night in Albuquerque. The Lobos are the No. 5-ranked team in Division I entering the season.

It was only the first day of the preseason, and the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks had trouble getting much of anything going.

The FLC men’s soccer team dropped an exhibition game 3-0 against the University of New Mexico Lobos, the No. 5 ranked team in Division I, on Monday night in Albuquerque.

FLC mustered only one shot attempt off the foot of junior midfielder Zac Lawrence, but that lone shot was off target.

UNM received goals from Kevin Correa, Niko Hansen and James Rogers while outshooting the Skyhawks 17-1. Six of the Lobos shots were on goal.

Rogers also added one assist in the game, as did Sam Gleadle and Ben McKendry.

Hansen scored his goal just 5 minutes, 11 seconds into the game. The score remained 1-0 at halftime before the Lobos tacked on two more in the second half.

FLC junior goalkeeper Ryan Schaul allowed all three of the Lobos’ goals, and he made three saves. Senior goalkeeper Ryan Pakieser kept a clean sheet without seeing a shot on goal in 24 minutes of action.

FLC was whistled for offsides four times in the game.

It was the first organized team activity of the season for the Skyhawks.

The Skyhawks will take the field again Aug. 30 in the annual alumni game at Dirks Field. They open the regular season Sept. 5 at home against Midwestern State.
