Starting where they last left off

Skyhawks picked No. 8 in RMAC preseason poll
Fort Lewis College senior outside hitter Ashley Wells was left off the Preseason All-RMAC team, but she will be a big part of the Skyhawks’ success this season. FLC enters the 2014 season ranked No. 8 in the preseason coaches poll.

Up three spots in the preseason rankings from a year ago, the Fort Lewis College volleyball team will look to show improvement this season.

The FLC Skyhawks enter the 2014 season ranked No. 8 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. FLC finished the 2013 season 10-18 and 10-9 in the RMAC, finishing with a winning record in conference for the first time since the 2008 season.

FLC is ranked right where it left off last season after an eighth-place finish in the RMAC.

The Skyhawks have four starters from last year’s squad returning to the roster this year with sophomore middle Madi Bickle, senior setter Heather Danny, senior opposite hitter Stephani Sonka and senior outside hitter Ashley Wells all coming back.

Colorado School of Mines, the two-time defending RMAC champions, enters the year ranked No. 1 in the conference. The Orediggers received five first-place votes and scored 153 points overall. Mines finished last season 25-7 overall and 17-2 in conference.

Colorado Mesa received three first-place votes and comes into the season ranked No. 2 with 143 points. Regis also received three first-place votes and tallied 137 points to earn the No. 3 ranking.

FLC is ranked right behind No. 7 Western New Mexico and ahead of CSU-Pueblo. UC-Colorado Springs rounds out the top 10 in the 14-team conference.

The Skyhawks didn’t have a player selected to the Preseason All-RMAC team.

Colorado Christian’s Taylor Sturms, a junior outside hitter, was named the Preseason Player of the Year.

Danielle Johnson-Hazlewood, a junior setter at Colorado Mines, was named the Preseason Setter of the Year.

Maya Kirkeby of Regis is the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

FLC opens its season Sept. 5 at a tournament at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas.
