FLC faces its adversity for a 4th-place guess

Caitlyn Espinosa and the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks will charge into the 2014 season ranked fourth in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference behind Colorado Mines, Metro State and Regis.

After a maligned offseason where the Fort Lewis College women’s soccer program lost its star player to disciplinary action and its head coach to defection, the Skyhawks, in the coaches’ eyes, will finish fourth in this year’s Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

RMAC coaches picked FLC to finish fourth in the preseason poll.

Three-time defending RMAC Tournament champion Colorado School of Mines received five first-place votes and 93 overall points to finish first, just two points ahead of preseason runner-up Metro State.

Metro State also received five first-place votes.

Regis received one first-place vote and 81 points and were picked to finish third.

FLC received 73 points and was picked to finish fourth, then was followed by UC-Colorado Springs, New Mexico Highlands, Adams State, CSU-Pueblo, Colorado Mesa, Western State and Colorado Christian.

Reigning RMAC Player of the Year Sam Weiss, who would’ve played her senior season in 2014, was released from the team by former head coach Damian Clarke during the offseason, then Clarke left the program for Midwestern State, leaving longtime assistant coach Jimmy Hall as the Skyhawks’ interim head coach.

FLC had no representatives on the Preseason All-RMAC roster.

Abby Rolph, a senior forward on Metro State from Golden, was named the RMAC Preseason Player of the Year. The All-American had 10 assists, eight goals and 26 points last season.

Colorado Mines’ Nicho Cusack, a senior defender from Golden, and Jayln Yates, a junior from Highlands Ranch, were named the RMAC Preseason Defender and Goalkeeper of the Year, respectively.

FLC, which finished 2013 16-6 overall and 10-4 in the RMAC, will play a scrimmage against Adams State on Saturday in Alamosa, another against Western State at home Aug. 27 at Dirks Field, then will host its annual alumnae game Aug. 30 at Dirks Field.

FLC will open its regular season at home against Texas Woman’s University on Sept. 4 at Dirks Field. Two days later, Hall and FLC will host Clarke and Midwestern State.
