Colorado fracking film to be shown at FLC

“Dear Governor Hickenlooper,” a crowd-sourced documentary about hydraulic fracturing in Colorado, will play at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Fort Lewis College, Chemistry Hall, Room 130 Auditorium, 1000 Rim Drive.

The film, which was directed and produced by Telluride filmmakers, dives into the contentious issue of fracking and delivers a message to Colorado’s governor: Stop fracking us.

The film is comprised of a collection of short films made by concerned citizens and Colorado filmmakers. It premiered at Mountainfilm in Telluride in May.

Violinist Popham will join Black Velvet for gig

Durango’s Black Velvet Band will be joined by a special guest during a gig at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Balcony Bar & Grill, 600 Main Ave.

Julia Popham is an 18-year-old violinist who a member of Carnegie Hall’s National Youth Orchestra of the United States, which is the first all-youth national orchestra for the U.S.

Popham has performed at the Kennedy Center, the Great Hall of the Moscow conservatory as well as the Royal Albert Hall in London. She has also been featured in The New York Times, on BBC and on CBS.

She will join members of the band: Larry Carver, Nina Sasaki, Ben Gibson, Ben Simpson and Dave Ortiz.
