Green Business Roundtable announces its fall schedule

The Green Business Roundtable lunches, a Wednesday fixture in Durango since 2002, begins a new season of lunch-table talks on environmental issues next month.

The fall circuit of speakers lines up thusly:

Sept. 10: “The Scoop on the Poop: Herbicides in our Manure and Compost” is the title of the talk by Darrin Parmenter, director and horticulturist at the Colorado State University Cooperative Extension.

Parmenter will explain what is being done locally to neutralize the herbicides that kill weeds in pastures but also kill certain crops grown commercially and in home gardens. The herbicides reach gardens through manure used in compost.

Oct. 9: “LPEA’s New Community Solar Garden Program” is the topic of the presentation by Heather Erb, a board member for La Plata Electric Association board.

The LPEA solar-garden project allows residents and businesses to buy shares of an off-site solar project. Six projects have gotten the OK to build.

Nov. 12. “The Economic Development of Open Lands Outdoor Lifestyles” is the topic of Gabe Preston, owner of RPI Consulting.

RPI is the only economic development and strategic planning firm working exclusively in rural towns and resort communities in the Southwest. Preston balances technical elements of planning and community outreach.

Dec. 10. “Will Solar Make Utilities Obsolete? A Look at the Future of the Electricity Business” will be Chris Calwell’s topic.

Calwell, co-founder of Ecos, now Ecova, looks at the future of the electric grid and what development of solar energy could mean for power suppliers.
