New-look BHS cross country gets running in Delta

A fresh, young Bayfield High School cross country team opened its 2014 season Friday at the Delta Invitational.

The Wolverines field mostly freshmen and sophomores after losing Eva-Lou Edwards, Danielle Miller and Maggie Zink to graduation and Aubree Lorenzen, who transferred to Durango High School.

Trevor Gabbard led the boys team in 30th, finishing in 17 minutes, 50 seconds.

“Trevor has set high goals for himself this year, and we look for him to help lead our team,” BHS head coach Josh Walton said in an email to The Durango Herald.

Alex Knight finished 50th in 18:24.27, freshman Sloan Mazur took 75th in 19:09.81, Bryan Gram was 118th in 21:06.11, Justis Herrera came in 119th in 21:09.16, and Joey Sandrey rounded out the team in 131st at 21:58.44.

BHS finished 13th out of 19 teams with 328 points on the boys side.

The Wolverines didn’t qualify for team scoring on the girls side, but they still placed four racers.

Rachel Cooper finished 40th in 22:09.5 to pace the team.

“This was Rachel’s first year of running cross country, and this is a great start for her,” Walton said.

Lexa Fleming took 66th in 23:19.76, Amber Johnson was 71st in 23:34.8 and Koya Maniss came in 104th in 27:05.37.

Fleming is the team’s only junior, while Johnson competed in distance track events last spring.

The girls team’s other returner, Bridget Goddard, is recovering a knee injury.

“For our first meet, I was happy with how the kids performed,” Walton said. “I think we will see lots of improvement over the course of the season, and we hope to have a very successful year.”

The Wolverines next will compete at the Joe Vigil/PUMA Invite on Sept. 6 at Adams State in Alamosa.
