Brush fire doused north of town

Durango Fire Protection District firefighters responded Sunday afternoon to a small brush fire north of Durango on U.S. Highway 550, just north of X-rock.

A small fire just north of X-rock was quickly doused by about 15 firefighters Sunday afternoon, said Durango Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Tony Harwig, who served as incident commander on scene.

Harwig said the fire apparently spread from an unattended camp fire, and it was extinguished once the firefighters reached it.

“There was no one around, and with the heat of the afternoon sun on the ridge, it got away,” Harwig said. “The wind was a little unnerving at first, but the guys got to it quickly.”

In addition, one tanker, one brush truck and one fire engine also responded.

“We canceled any federal resources,” he said. “They were on standby. We just didn’t need them. It’s a good system.”

The fire, which grew to about 20-feet by 20-feet, produced some smoke, and one tree caught fire, Harwig said.

Southbound traffic on U.S. Highway 550 was briefly rerouted to Animas View Drive.
