A slow start and a penalty

FLC women’s soccer suffers first loss of the young season

A sluggish start in Texas played right into the hands of Angelo State.

The Fort Lewis College women’s soccer team dropped its first game of the 2014 season in a 4-0 loss to Angelo State on the neutral field Thursday in Dallas.

“We had a slow start in the first half,” FLC interim head coach Jimmy Hall said in a news release. “We came out well in the second half and answered the energy and possessed the ball better. Unfortunately, we gave up a penalty kick and made it difficult for ourselves the rest of the game.”

Angelo State (3-0-0) scored just 9 minutes, 25 seconds into the game, as Sierra Anderson put a shot past FLC junior goalkeeper Caitlyn Espinosa. Kathleen Keoughan also scored in the first half on a direct free kick from 30 yards out.

The Rambelles’ third goal came via penalty kick in the 57th minute, and the fourth goal was added by Brianne Brown with just two minutes remaining in the match.

FLC (1-1-1) was outshot 11-9, and Espinosa made one save in the match. Angelo State goalkeeper Shantel Wittke made three saves.

The Skyhawks will play again at 1:30 p.m. Saturday against tournament host Dallas Baptist University.
