DHS takes 2

Pitching propels DHS softball

They wanted to win three, but two will do just fine.

The Durango High School softball team picked up a pair of wins Saturday in Delta, completing a three-game series in Delta 2-1. After a late-inning collapse cost the Demons a win Friday night in an 11-10 loss to Delta, they bounced back Saturday to beat Rifle 15-0 in four innings and Eagle Valley 11-5.

“I’m kind of bummed when we didn’t go 3-0, because we had the game (Friday) in the bag and let it slip through our fingers,” said DHS first-year head coach Chelsea Rodriguez. “But we can’t be too upset. We learn every game and bring back home things we know we can improve.”

Augusta Brockus pitched in the DHS (6-4, 0-1 Southwestern League) win against Rifle. Rodriguez said she was able to record a few strikeouts and did such a good job mixing up her location that the Rifle hitters routinely hit easy flyballs or routine groundballs.

Camille Bisbee pitched against Eagle Valley, and Rodriguez was impressed with the junior’s ability to close out the game.

“She did a good job and battled. They scored some runs, but Cami finished really strong to get the win,” Rodriguez said.

Paige Mazur hit her second home run of the season against Rifle. It was an inside-the-park homer, but Rodriguez said it would have gone over the fence, if there was a fence.

Rodriguez said Katelyn DeLuche and Rebekah Ford also came through with clutch hits in both games.

DHS will resume SWL play Friday with a home doubleheader against Grand Junction (2-9, 0-2 SWL).

“We are constantly improving and hoping to finish the rest of the season stronger than we started,” Rodriguez said.
