Once more before league

DHS ready to host Piedra Vista
DHS junior outside hitter Maddie Robertson is leading the team in kills this season. The Demons play their final nonconference game before league play at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at home against Piedra Vista.

Confidence hasn’t been hard to find lately for the Durango High School volleyball team.

The Demons won their pool and finished fourth overall at a tournament in Cherry Creek over the weekend, and they play their last nonconference game against Piedra Vista at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Durango High School.

It’s Durango’s first home game since their season opener, a five-set loss to Bayfield (6-2).

“It’s always fun,” DHS head coach Colleen Keresey said of being back at home. “The girls enjoy being announced in front of their friends and family. Hopefully we’ll have a big crowd there (Tuesday). I think it just brings more energy to our team.”

DHS (7-3) has won seven out of its last nine games and has beat three Class 5A schools during that stretch.

DHS junior Maddie Robertson is leading the Demons with 2.4 kills per set so far this season. She also is tied in for second on the team with 67 digs.

Six other Demons average at least one kill per set, and senior setter Logan Clark keeps the whole offense running with 205 assists this season.

“There’s no quit in them,” Keresey said of her team. “They’re really enjoyable to be around and really like to be around each other. They have goals for this season. They know what it takes to win our league and what it takes to get back to state, and they’re willing to work for it.”

Before any talk of league or state, though, DHS has to deal with Piedra Vista (3-3).

The Panthers are off to a mixed start this season.

They already have tied their loss total from last season playing the toughest competition the Four Corners has to offer from all states and classifications.

Piedra Vista has split two matches against Bayfield, lost twice to powerhouse Monument Valley (Kayenta, Arizona) and beaten San Juan (Blanding, Utah).

Piedra Vista senior Brittney Hutchison is the Panthers’ leading attacker from last year, and they returned senior setter Vanessa Harris.

“I think we’re looking at a similar team to ours, very athletic, very deep,” Keresey said. “Just a good all-around volleyball team. We’re preparing to play our best game and our best side of the court.”

The Demons have 85 aces in 29 sets this season, nearly three per set, and just 66 errors in 482 serves.

“Every game, our serving is a big weapon for us,” Keresey said. “I think that, no matter what the score indicates, (Tuesday) we feel like we’ve played our best volleyball is going to prepare us for league. We haven’t peaked yet.”
