Mercy unveils surgery robot

Big improvement over past methods

Mercy Regional Medical Center on Tuesday unveiled a surgeon-operated robot that urologists will use in prostate surgery and hysterectomies.

The public is invited to “test drive” the robot Wednesday to learn of its improvement over traditional methods of urological surgery.

Anyone interested in operating the apparatus should inquire at the front desk at the hospital.

The da Vinci robot is minimally invasive, which reduces patient trauma, blood loss and recovery time.

Intuitive Surgical headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, manufactures the da Vinci. Out of the box, the apparatus costs $1.75 million.

Mercy acquired its da Vinci through a sister member of Catholic Health Initiatives.
