Passenger record set at our own little airport

Back-to-back months highest ever

The Durango-La Plata County Airport in July and August registered back-to-back record passenger traffic.

In July, 19,863 passengers departed the airport on one of four carriers. The number for August climbed to 19,922. Adding arriving traffic, the airport served just shy of 40,000 passengers each of the two months.

Airports measure traffic by departures, said airport manager Kip Turner. The absolute figures for arrivals was not given.

“This is absolutely the highest number of emplanements ever at this airport,” Turner said.

The records set in July and August are indicative of the overall growth of the airport over the last 10 to 15 years, Turner said.

As growth continues, the airport has begun to update its master plan, Turner said. Since 2000, the airport has seen an almost 110 percent growth in departing passengers, jumping from 91,000 to 192,000 in 2013.

The master plan looks at growth over the next 20 years and how to make the facility the preferred gateway to La Plata County.

Airlines that serve La Plata County during the summer months are Frontier, United Express, US Airways and American Eagle.
