FLC wins RMAC opener

Skyhawks’ men’s soccer side shuts out Adams State in Alamosa

One in the first, one in the second, and the Fort Lewis College men’s soccer team beat Adams State 2-0 on Tuesday in Alamosa in both teams’ Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener.

Cesar Castillo scored his second goal of the season in the 17th minute.

Tamino Kroeger scored his fourth goal of the season in the 86th minute.

Yannis Becker had a game-high four shots and three on goal for the Skyhawks, and Ryan Schaul made two saves in goal to earn the clean sheet. Becker assisted Kroeger’s insurance goal.

“I am very happy with how we reacted to a tough travel schedule,” FLC head coach Oige Kennedy said in a news release. “The guys haven’t had a lot of recovery time between games, so we were happy with the performance today and had to battle with a much-improved opponent.”

The Skyhawks returned home Monday night from a two-game, .500 trip to Laredo, Texas, then left for their conference opener less than 24 hours later.

“The coaching staff at Adams has done a great job of getting better each season, and we saw that today,” Kennedy said. “Their players work extremely hard and pressured us for 90 minutes, so I was glad to see us move the ball as well as we did. It was a good first three points for us in the league, and ASU will be a tough road trip for a lot of RMAC schools.

“We had to work very hard for each other to get our first clean sheet of the season, which was an important step in the right direction. We have scored eleven goals in our first five games, so it’s good to see us keep our opponent out and restrict their goal opportunities.

“The guys will have to recoup quickly and get ready to leave for Denver this weekend and look to continue the good start we have made to our league campaign,” Kennedy said.

FLC (3-2, 1-0 RMAC) will play Colorado Christian at 11 a.m. Sunday in Lakewood.
