Demons play follow the leader

Durango boys cross country 2nd in Coronado

The message remains the same for the Durango High School cross country team: Run as a pack; succeed as a pack.

DHS took second on the boys side and 10th on the girls side Thursday at the Coronado Cougar Classic on Thursday in Colorado Springs.

“These are some of the top 5A schools in Colorado,” DHS head coach David McMillan said of the competition. “It was a big meet. Great performance by the guy’s side.”

Mountain Vista, currently ranked No. 4 in Nike’s southwest regional rankings, won the boys meet with 66 points, and DHS was second with 86.

Payton Smith of Mountain Vista won the boys race in 16 minutes, 23.6 seconds.

Gordon Gianniny paced the Demons in 11th at 16:58.3.

Benjamin Lachelt followed Gianniny for DHS in 12th one second later, and teammate Nicholas Turco was 13th in 17:00.2.

Only top-15 results immediately were available.

“Our split is 22 seconds,” McMillan said of the Demons’ gap between their first and fifth varsity runner. “We consistently are tighter than everyone else.”

Air Academy won the girls meet with 61 points, paced by Katie Rainsberger, who won in 18:14.6.

“She’s a different class of athlete,” McMillan said.

DHS finished with 286 points on the girls side.

Shannon Maloney led the Demons in 14th at 20:15.1.

“Shannon had a good race on the girl’s side,” McMillan said. “She faded a little over the last mile.”

DHS will return to action Saturday in Pagosa Springs.
