Durango’s top dogs run support for the Demons’ cross country team

A new crop of Demons got a chance to shine Saturday at the Pagosa Springs Cross Country Classic with most of Durango High School’s top guns taking it easy after running Tuesday at Coronado.

DHS finished third in both the boys and girls races, with Mancos winning the boys meet and host Pagosa Springs winning the girls meet.

“(Our top runners) competed (Saturday) in Pagosa but matched up with some of the kids that didn’t get to run in Coronado and helped those kids run stronger,” DHS assistant cross country coach Brett Wilson said. “The kids in Pagosa said they really enjoyed the day, being able to encourage and run along with their teammates. It was a really positive experience for the kids and for team-building.”

Coltin Gallegos led the DHS boys team, finishing fifth in 20 minutes, 10 seconds. Liam O’Brien took 14th in 20:54, Thomas Pannell was 20th in 21:17, Will Swenson finished 28th in 21:59, and Seth Johnson was right behind him in 29th at 22:09.

Marley Weaver-Gabel paced the DHS girls team in 25:01, Mary Sindberg finished in 25:52, Grace Panze in 27:24, Ellli Trussel in 27:46 and Carter Reiter in 28:21.

Full results weren’t available, and Wilson wasn’t positive of the girls team’s placing.

“(Saturday) was a good day overall. One the girls side, we had some girls joining our varsity contingency for the first time this season or joining us back from being injured or out of commission,” Wilson said. “On the guys side, it was a similar race.”

DHS next will race at the Chicken Creek Challenge on Friday in Mancos.
