Mercury building gets LEED Gold designation

Mercury Payment Systems’ new headquarters in south Durango has received a LEED Gold certification, a leading environmental award for energy-efficient buildings.

The company, now part of Cincinnati-based Vantiv, opened Mercury Village in May. The 80,500-square-foot building uses water efficient fixtures to reduce water usage by more than 40 percent. During building, 75 percent of construction materials were recycled, the company said in a news release Monday.

LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, designations are awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council. The council designates buildings as LEED certified, Silver, Gold or Platinum.
