Several different organizations are holding debates and forums as we approach Election Day on Nov. 4. Some are general in nature, others will address specific topics:

6:30 p.m. today: Durango Fraternal Order of Police host Duke Schirard and Sean Smith for a discussion of law-enforcement issues at the Exhibition Hall at the La Plata County Fairgrounds. It is open to the public.

6:30 p.m. Tuesday: The Durango Gun Club also will host the candidates for sheriff at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4031, 1550 Main Ave. The debate will be limited to gun issues, including questions about the gun range, which is shared with law enforcement. Members of the public may submit questions in writing.

8 a.m. Oct. 7: Durango Chamber of Commerce and La Plata Forum will host the two sheriff candidates and the two candidates for La Plata County Treasurer – Allison Morrissey and Bobby Lieb – at the DoubleTree Hotel. The charge is $15 for chamber members, $20 for nonmembers and includes breakfast. An RSVP is requested at 247-0312 or chamber@durangobusiness.org.

6 p.m. Oct. 9: League of Women Voters will welcome all the local candidates in contested races in the Durango City Council Chambers, and the forum will be televised on City Span-10. Candidates for county commissioner, sheriff, coroner and treasurer will get the chance to speak their piece. Unopposed candidates La Plata County Clerk & Recorder Tiffany Lee Parker and Assessor Craig Larson will be given three minutes to introduce themselves.
