Police ID driver who died in crash

On Monday, the Colorado State Patrol identified the victim of a fatal head-on crash as Kevin Streib, 48, of Gaston, Oregon.

Troopers suspect driver fatigue played a role in the accident that occurred about 1 a.m. Sunday just east of the La Plata-Archuleta county line on U.S. Highway 160, near mile marker 111, Capt. Adrian Driscoll said.

Streib was driving a 2002 Ford Mustang westbound when he crossed the center line and crashed head-on into a 1995 International tractor-trailer traveling eastbound with a load of coal, Driscoll said.

The Mustang came to rest about 100 feet off the road down an embankment, where it burst into flames.

Streib was pronounced dead on scene, he said. The driver of the truck, Michael Jones, 55, of Penrose, and passenger Robert Nacio, 46, of Colorado Springs, were treated for minor injuries.

The truck was carrying coal from the King Mine, near Hesperus, to Pueblo. The truck’s cab caught fire, and flames spread to the coal. Firefighters and hazardous materials teams disassembled the coal truck to fully extinguish it. The highway was closed for about seven hours.
