Council backs water for Animas Air Park

The Durango City Council assured the Animas Air Park Property Association on Tuesday night that the city will build a water main in 2015 that the park’s businesses can use.

The water main, estimated to cost $1.16 million, is part of the long-term plan to connect the city to a new water-treatment plant at Lake Nighthorse.

The water main will to be built to provide the city with a secondary source of water; by building it now, it will provide a needed service to businesses.

Jerry Zinc, the director of the association and vice president of StoneAge Waterblast Tools, was pleased with the decision because the association already has started building the water-distribution main for the air park with grant funds.

“We look forward to having water in 2015,” Zinc said.

Normally, developments outside of town must agree to adhere to city building standards before receiving city water. This is generally required to make it easier for the city officials to annex areas close to the city boundary.

However, because the air park was developed under county standards, the city will work out individual agreements with each business that will hook up to the main. Businesses will not be required to obey the aesthetic parts of city code, said Greg Hoch, director of planning and community development for the city of Durango.

Zink said his association unanimously approved the grant, and several businesses are interested in hooking up to city water.

A draft proposal of an agreement between StoneAge and the city was presented the councilors Tuesday night. The city manager was given permission to sign it when all the players agree to it.
