IHS football plays with 2004 in mind

Bobcats host Dolores for Victory No. 2

The Ignacio High School football team needs a win to avoid its worst season since 2004.

That year, the Bobcats went 1-8 and ended their season with a 60-0 drubbing at Bayfield High School in a Pine River rivalry game.

The 2014 edition of the Bobcats will host Dolores (3-5, 1-3 SPL) at 7 p.m. Friday at Ignacio High School, searching for just their second win this season.

IHS (1-7, 0-3 Southern Peaks League) beat John Mall 26-19 on Sept. 26 in its only victory of the season. The team has lost three in a row after leaving Walsenburg and has been outscored 112-30 during that stretch.

IHS senior quarterback Adison Jones has carried much of the offensive load this season. He’s thrown for 1,426 yards and nine touchdowns, while the Bobcats only have run for 456 yards all season, a 3.4 yards-per-carry clip.

In Dolores, the Bobcats will face a team that also has lost two in a row.

The Bears run a balanced offense on the ground. Senior Mikeal Ford leads the team with 455 yards rushing, and junior Branden Donaldson is close behind him with 430. Three other Bears have more than 25 carries on the season.

No Bears quarterback has thrown for more than 200 yards this year.

Friday’s game will mark the end of a career of the four seniors on Ignacio’s roster: Jones, Alex Lopez, Blaine Mickey and Mike Perez.

IHS head coach Lupe Huerta could not be reached for comment.
