Young fans, stay seated

School district to enforce rule at games

Durango School District 9-R asked young fans to stay seated in the stands during Durango High School’s last football game Friday night.

The district sent a note to parents last week asking them to keep students in the stands during games. The rule will apply to basketball games and other sports.

Parents have been asked to supervise elementary school students at all times and keep middle school students in the stands.

To help enforce this, the district announced that the north hill at the DHS football stadium would be closed and south hill would be open only to high school students.

This season, parents have been dropping off middle school students at football games, and they had been roughhousing on the north hill, district spokeswoman Julie Popp said.

“If you are roughhousing over there, you could fall and get serious injuries,” she said.

Unsupervised students had been refusing to listen to administrators and security staff at the games and the problems had been getting worse, she said.

The district’s message also reminded parents that playing with balls and running in the stadium is prohibited.
