Brothers Lawrence golden in Golden

Luke finishes Zak’s assist to goal, as FLC beats Colorado Mines

A little brotherly love on Halloween night sent the Fort Lewis College men’s soccer team to a big win.

Tied 1-1 in overtime, Zac Lawrence hit brother Luke Lawrence with a pass, and Luke Lawrence put a shot past Colorado School of Mines goalkeeper Collin Hall to give the FLC Skyhawks (10-7, 8-5 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) a big 2-1 win and the critical three points that come along with it.

“They really do combine well together,” FLC head coach Oige Kennedy said of the Lawrence brothers. “They did it on the same high school team, and they’re doing it here in college. They are on the same wavelength, and they played a great one-two to put it in. Tremendous finish, tremendous pass.”

Luke Lawrence scored twice in the match, as he netted the first goal of the game in the 30th minute. That goal was assisted by midfielder Alberto Capdepon, who made his presence felt after missing much of the year with an injury.

“He was the man,” Kennedy said of Luke Lawrence. “Him and Yannis (Becker) were so dangerous going forward, and having Alberto back in the midfield has helped a lot. Luke and Yannis were close to winning in normal time, but I’m proud of Luke to get another game-winner.”

Colorado Mines (10-7, 8-5 RMAC) drew even on a penalty-kick goal in the 55th minute off the boot of Nikolaus Grotz.

“It was a tricky one. Our defender went to the ground to win a ball and caught a player,” Kennedy said of the foul that led to the PK. “We got back in the game after that, controlled it and responded well. The guys have been good with responding when we go behind or have one go against us.”

Both goalkeepers played outstanding, as Ryan Schaul made eight saves for FLC and Hall 12 saves for Mines before allowing the golden goal.

“Schaul was amazing and made two or three top-drawer saves,” Kennedy said. “He worked hard and showed well.”

FLC dominated the attack with 28 shots and 14 on goal. Colorado Mines had 17 shots.

Luke Lawrence was on target all night, placing 6-of-7 shots on goal. Becker put 5-of-9 shots on frame.

It was a big three points for FLC, as the Skyhawks aim for a No. 3 seed in the RMAC Tournament, which will begin Wednesday. FLC now has 18 points in the league and is tied with Colorado Mines and UC-Colorado Springs for the No. 3 seed.

FLC will close out the season at 1 p.m. Sunday against Colorado Christian (5-12, 2-11 RMAC) at home.

“A few weeks ago after we lost to Regis, I said, ‘This is Fort Lewis. We are going to keep going until we are told we can’t play anymore,’” Kennedy said. “We are trying to win this trophy. We have to win and push ourselves. We’ve faced a lot of adversity, but we keep coming back for more.”
