No. 3 seed suits BHS volleyball at state

Wolverines looking to move past pool play for first time in 5 years
Terene Foutz has led the Bayfield High School volleyball team to two state tournament berths in her first two years at the helm. The Wolverines will be the No. 3 seed when pool play opens at 8 a.m. Friday in Denver.

Not much changed for the Bayfield High School volleyball team in between the Wolverines’ regional victory and the release of the state championship brackets Monday.

That’s a good thing for the Wolverines.

BHS (22-3) will be the No. 3 seed at the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 3A state tournament Friday and Saturday at the Denver Coliseum.

The Wolverines will face No. 10 Pagosa Springs and No. 6 Manitou Springs on Friday in Pool 3.

Pool play begins at 8 a.m. both days, and each match will begin eight minutes after the preceding match ends.

BHS will play Pagosa Springs (19-6) in the fourth match Friday and Manitou Springs (21-4) in the eighth and final match Friday.

Manitou Springs and Pagosa Springs will face each other in the fourth match of the day Saturday.

The winners of the four pools will make the semifinals.

Eaton (24-0) is the defending state champion and top seed in the tournament with No. 8 Sterling (16-9) and No. 12 Olathe (21-4) in Pool 1.

The Reds knocked BHS out of last year’s tournament in pool play.

Valley (22-3) is the No. 2 seed in Pool 2 with No. 7 Platte Valley (17-8) and No. 11 Coal Ridge (19-6).

University (18-7) rounds out the top four with No. 5 Colorado Springs Christian (23-2) and No. 9 Faith Christian (18-7) in Pool 4.

Should BHS win the pool, the Wolverines will face the winner of Pool 2.

Pool 1’s winner will play the Pool 4 victor in the semifinals.

Semifinals begin immediately after pool play Saturday, and all finals will start at 7 p.m. Saturday.

The Wolverines last advanced out of pool play to the semifinals in 2009 and are 3-12 all-time at the state tournament.

BHS head coach Terene Foutz could not be reached for comment.
