Same-sex marriage should be legal

Seniors at Bayfield High School, which I attend, are required to take a government course in order to graduate. In this course, students are required to become “active” citizens by choosing a topic and becoming involved in advocacy.

I chose to become an active citizen by informing others about same-sex marriage. As of recently, same-sex marriage has been legalized in Colorado. Although 32 states have same-sex marriage legalized, other states still have legal challenges pending. I do realize that every individual has the right to disagree or agree with same-sex marriage.

My goal for this project is not to attempt to sway the opinions of others, but to inform the public that same-sex marriage is an equal right.

Equality is an obvious issue in the United States. It took women more than 100 years to get rights, and we still are not “equal” to men in many ways, which is why I believe that legalizing same-sex marriage should not take any longer. Everyone deserves to be treated with the same equality as others. As many have heard, treat others the way you want to be treated.
