Liberty Hill mention triggered memories

I got an unexpected shock when I saw the story “Durango: Frigid, but luckier than ghost-riddled Liberty Hill” (Herald, Nov. 18).

I spent eight (long, mostly hot) years there as a Colorado expatriate and still remember the relief I felt seeing Liberty Hill in the rear-view mirror when I left to move to the Four Corners! Seeing a mention of an obscure Texas town I thought I’d left behind me was disconcerting, to say the least.

I’ll not go into detail comparing the Durango area to Liberty Hill; suffice to say that I like it much better here, although there are a few things I still miss about Austin.

I have to offer a correction, though: The Ott Hotel (where the ghosts are) is in Liberty, Texas, not Liberty Hill. Liberty is about 45 miles northeast of Houston; Liberty Hill is 45 miles northwest of Austin – they are about 230 miles (and at least half-a-dozen speed traps) apart.
