1,500 people went to Community Dinner

Assistant County Manager Joanne Spina volunteers on Thursday during the Durango Community Thanksgiving Dinner at the La Plata County Fairgrounds in the exhibit hall.

Another round of applause is due to the people behind this year’s La Plata County Community Dinner, which fed more than 1,500 people on Thanksgiving, said Tonya Wales, the event’s Chair.

That’s well “up from the 1,100 served last year,” she said.

With numbers like that, there is little doubt that the Community Dinner will prove to have been the biggest charity event of 2014.

She said the dinner was hosted by Durango Shared Ecumenical Ministries, including St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, First United Methodist Church, Christ the King Lutheran Church, St. Columba Catholic Church, The River Church, Congregation Har Shalom, First Presbyterian Church and Mercy Regional Medical Center.

The turkeys were cooked by The Palace, Nature’s Oasis, Mercy Regional Medical Center, Serious Texas Bar-B-Q and the La Plata County jail.

She said the following community partners supported the event with donations:

Durango Party Rental, CJ’s Diner, Jean-Pierre, Norton’s Hwy 3 Roadhouse, The Palace, Bread, Serious Delights, Desert Sun Coffee, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Durango Joe’s, Kassidy’s Kitchen, Basin Printing, McDonald’s, Coca-Cola of Durango, Building Specialties, Columbine Sharpening, Peak Energy and Southwest Ice.
