Iron Horse not sold out, yet

4 of 5 men’s racing categories full
Riders in the 2013 Iron Horse Bicycle Classic citizens tour were treated to sunny skies. The next year, the race was shortened after snow fell on Coal Bank and Molas passes. “Last year was a tough year,” race director Gaige Sippy said. “We’re pretty confident we’re in good shape for this year.”

Several road race categories are sold out, but about 125 slots remained Tuesday evening for the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic’s citizens tour.

IHBC Director Gaige Sippy said at 5 p.m. Tuesday that he guessed those slots will sell in the next 48 hours.

But Sippy added that slots still will be available through three charitable partners: the Davis Phinney Foundation, Fort Lewis College Road Scholars and the Livestrong Foundation. Registration fees through the charitable partners are more than regular registration – $175-$400 compared with $99 – but extras come with the charitable registrations, and most of the extra money raised remains in the community.

Under an agreement with the Colorado State Patrol, the Iron Horse is limited to 2,500 riders for the May 23 race and ride from Durango to Silverton. About 1,900 slots go to the citizens tour and 600 to the race.

Four of five men’s racing categories are sold out, and spots remain open for women’s and juniors classes, Sippy said.

Also, slots are open for the Quarter Horse (ride from Durango to Purgatory), the mountain bike race and other road races and kids races for the May 23-25 event.

“By and large, we’re seeing good representation and sign-ups in all the events,” Sippy said. “That’s a good sign.”

Last year’s road and mountain bike events were shortened and canceled, respectively, because of rain and snow on Memorial Day weekend. It appears there’s been some effect – last year’s road ride sold out in 10 hours – but not in a huge way.

“Last year was a tough year,” said Sippy, who was director from 2007 to 2013 but not in 2014. “We’re pretty confident we’re in good shape for this year.”
