Spanish influence hits Animas High

Students have their work showcased at Studio &

Level 3 Spanish students of teacher Crystal Pennington’s classroom at Animas High School covered a lot of time in seven weeks, from prehistoric to post-modern.

Their final assignment was to study an artistic and literary movement from the same era and express their reaction on canvas and in writing.

The art was on display Wednesday at Studio &, with students on hand to explain what they accomplished.

Avra Saslow painted an artichoke on a background of colorful geometric figures. It was her reaction to Pablo Neruda’s poem “Oda a la Alcachofa.”

Neruda tried to give ordinary objects more prominence, Avra said.

Hanging immediately above the rendition of the artichoke was a forest in somber colors painted by Shea Toner.

Shea’s forest was a reaction to a similar scene painted by a Spaniard whose only name she could recall was Joaquin.

“He expressed romanticism through landscapes,” Shea said.

Risa Holmes and Marley Weaver each did a painting titled Instante Decisivo that depicts a battle with figures of people and a white horse. Their inspiration was a work by the same name of Luis Felipe Noe.

French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson also had work titled Instante Decisivo.

In Risa’s work, the multi-colored sky above the battlefield expresses the chaos of the scene. Marle’s battleground is in black and white, with the bright colors in a panel to the left side.

After the holidays, her students will tackle Latino dance, food or music, Pennington said.
