Demon girls remain perfect

Three players reached double-digit scoring, and the Durango Demons remained perfect to open the season.

The Durango High School girls basketball team (3-0) had no problem in the first round of the Pueblo County Lady Hornets Holiday Tournament in Pueblo. Led by junior guard Katie Wiegert’s hot 3-point shooting, the Demons picked up a 48-22 win against Aurora Central (1-4).

Wiegert scored 18 points on 4-of-5 shooting from 3.

Head coach Tim Fitzpatrick was especially pleased with his team’s all-around defense.

“We played really good defense across the board,” he said.

Junior post player Danica Dudley added 10 points for DHS, and junior guard Shilo Gillen added another 11 points.

“Dudley played well, and Shaelee Hawkins played really well, too,” Fitzpatrick said.

DHS will play at 5 p.m. Friday against Colorado Springs’ Harrison High School. The tournament is a round-robin through the first rounds before bracket play begins Saturday.
