Better effort, but Bayfield girls remain winless

Not all losses are felt equally.

The Bayfield High School girls basketball team fell 59-50 to Buena Vista on Saturday at the Buena Vista tournament to drop its record to 0-3 on the year.

But BHS head coach Bri Simbeck was more impressed with her team’s effort against the Demons than in previous contests.

“The girls showed tremendous fight right until the end,” she said.

The Wolverines were missing senior guard Andrea Zelinski, who was taking the ACT.

Seven of the 10 players that played for BHS scored.

Junior Aspen Smith led BHS with 15 points, and senior Jessie Roukema had 13 for the Wolverines.

“I wasn’t pleased with the game (Friday) night,” Simbeck said. “I thought they made a good turnaround and played together. The defense made a 180.”

The Wolverines have their next shot at their first win at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Aztec.

“We’re playing a really difficult preseason schedule, and I knew that it was going to be that way,” Simbeck said. “The girls fought better. I think it was an improvement for us, and we’re going to carry that momentum into practice.”
