Finding the groove

The lid still hasn’t come off the basket this year for the Bayfield High School girls basketball team.

BHS (0-4) lost its fourth consecutive game to open the season 40-24 at Aztec (5-4) on Tuesday in Aztec.

It was the Wolverines’ lowest output of the season and third time they were held under 40 points for the third time in four games.

“Our offense didn’t look as good as we wanted,” BHS head coach Bri Simbeck said. “We know it’s something we need to improve. It’s only our fourth game. Aztec has played nine games. We’re young, we’re continuing to improve.”

BHS senior Jessie Roukema found her scoring groove, leading the team with 12 points.

Junior Emily Peinado also had six for BHS.

“I thought that our reserves that came in, at times showed a lot of heart,” Simbeck said. “Jade Sanders had two steals in a row when time was running out in the first half and we were trying to make a run.

BHS next plays at 7 p.m. Friday against Farmington in Farmington at the Scorpion Invitational.
